Lee Hogan Racing - Interschool Dirtbike Teams - Corangamite schools training day
By Reinier Bouman
Twenty-eight teenagers took part in an Australian first; school rider training. On contacting Lee Hogan, from Lee Hogan Racing, he was enthusiastic about this new venture and Lee and Tim came down and amazingly enough for late July, we had a sensational day, weather wise and training wise.
The whole event would not have been possible without the amazing support from Fiona Harrington way back in 2012, and Leeona van Duynhoven, Brophy's coordinator for SFYS [School Focused Youth Services] .SFYS provided the very generous funding for the day's rider training. A HUGE thankyou doesn't seem enough to say.
Yeah, this was yet another 'Interschool Dirtbike Teams' event.
This event was funded for Corangamite schools only at this time. The rider numbers were limited to a max of 30 to give each person a quality training day with Lee Hogan Racing.
AFAIK, and as far as Lee Hogan is aware, this is the first time in Australia where a rider training day is held for secondary school students.
The off-road riding skills are transferable to on-road skills making for a safer experience for our youth. One of our aims is to keep our young people safe on the road. Whatever happened to driver education at schools? There certainly never was anything like rider training. And we want to do something about that.
We also want to strengthen relations between schools through cooperative sports days like these that will have positive ongoing effects within the Corangamite Shire and further afield.
Naturally we also want to promote Motocross as a school sport; there's a great many students that are never given the chance to win trophies for their school in something they excell at.
I also want to thank the Shipwreck Coast Motocross Club for being our hosting organisation on this occasion, The Warrnambool Motorcycling Club for their loyal support and generously providing access to their facilities. Debbie Windon for her unstinting and tireless work in organising the Interschool Dirtbike Teams with me.
The support of schools and parents in the Corangamite Shire is invaluable, but most of all a big thanks to the terrific students who are eager to learn, well mannered and can teach other teenagers a thing or two about passion, competence and enthusiasm for their sport.
I hope that everyone involved had a great day
